It's important to note that only three of the types of legitimacy I describe (traditional, charismatic, legal-rational) were described by Max Weber, and the way I'm using these ideas is a little different to him (as best I understand). For me, these types of legitimacy are the types of arguments or reasons that support a current regime or system. For Weber they also seemed to describe the type of system. So, for example, a tribe might be traditional in the sense its people believe in the system because it's always been like this, but also traditional because it's not governed by codified rules (unlike a modern legal-rational bureaucracy).

'Politics as a Vocation' by Max Weber describes the types of legitimacy and is worth reading in its own right https://www.balliol.ox.ac.uk/sites/de...
Francis Fukuyama talks a lot about legitimacy in 'End of History' and 'The Origins of Political Order' - both very good books
