This project is based on a pendulum mechanism, where the motion of the pendulum bob drives a butterfly’s wing flapping.
By combining timekeeping principles with biomimetic motion, the work explores new possibilities in time measurement and energy conversion, highlighting the idea of “complex wisdom within simple mechanics.”

Design Concept
The inspiration comes from high school physics experiments on simple harmonic motion and energy conservation, combined with the rhythmic stability of pendulums in everyday life.
Rather than treating the pendulum purely as a timekeeping device, this project reimagines it as a creative installation that connects classical physics with modern artistic expression, making time visible, tangible, and alive.

Manufacturing and Process
The structure was fabricated using laser cutting and laser welding, followed by manual grinding and fine adjustment.
High precision was required to align rotating shafts and gears on the same plane. Multiple pendulum swing tests were conducted to determine suitable weight and height parameters.
Tilt angles were adjusted using a sine gauge setup to temporarily stabilize motion, while further refinement is planned to complete the butterfly mechanism.

Materials and Equipment
Main materials include stainless steel plates, wooden components, and rotating shafts.
Laser fabrication was carried out using CutAir laser cutting and WeldAir laser welding equipment.
