Prefers open areas, including agricultural landscapes, sitting on exposed perches including electric wires, occasionally pumping its tail slowly. Practically a resident roller with some movements in the western parts of its range.
The Indian roller is a bird of the family Coraciidae. It is 30–34 cm long with a wingspan of 65–74 cm and weighs 166–176 g. The face and throat are pinkish, the head and back are brown, with blue on the rump and contrasting light and dark blue on the wings and tail.

The name of the roller is influenced by the aerobatic displays performed by the male roller during the breeding season. The roller family is also identified as a stocky bird, and locally known as Neelkanth in India.
Karnataka, along with other States (Andhra Pradesh,Bihar, and Odisha) has chosen the Indian Roller. It's a bird that almost as beautiful as the Peacock, and as interesting too. These birds can often be seen perched on telephone or telegraph wires, and they feed on insects, spiders, small lizards, snakes and frogs, too.
