Good evening, reports indicate that Sir Keir Starmer is set to attend a significant international peace summit in Egypt this Monday. Downing Street has confirmed his participation, highlighting that the summit will involve the signing of a peace plan for Gaza, marking what they describe as a "historic turning point" after prolonged conflict.
At the summit, hosted in Sharm El-Sheikh, Sir Keir Starmer is expected to offer "particular tribute" to US President Donald Trump, who will co-chair the event alongside Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The gathering will bring together leaders from over twenty nations.
This development follows a ceasefire that took effect in Gaza on Friday morning. This initial phase of the agreement, brokered by President Trump, includes a hostage return deal between Israel and Hamas. Under the terms, Hamas has until Monday to release all Israeli hostages. In return, Israel is slated to release approximately 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,700 detainees. Additionally, increased humanitarian aid is to be permitted into the Gaza Strip.
While the first phase appears to be progressing, negotiations for subsequent phases could prove more challenging. These later stages are expected to address complex issues such as the future governance of Gaza, the extent of Israeli troop withdrawal, and the disarmament of Hamas.
Sir Keir Starmer is also slated to acknowledge the contributions of Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey in reaching this juncture, before emphasizing the need for continued international coordination to achieve swift progress towards the second phase of the truce. The UK, according to Downing Street, will offer its "steadfast support" to help secure the ceasefire, facilitate urgent humanitarian aid, and lay the groundwork for lasting peace and security in the region.
French President Emmanuel Macron will also be in attendance, expressing his full support for the agreement's implementation. The Egyptian presidency has stated the summit's aim is to "end the war in the Gaza Strip, strengthen peace and stability efforts in the Middle East, and open a new page in regional security and stability." President Trump has indicated he will address Israel's parliament before heading to Egypt.
The ceasefire came into effect after the Israeli government approved the initial phase of Trump's deal, following indirect talks held in Egypt. While Israeli troops have partially withdrawn from some areas of Gaza, they still occupy half of the Strip. It is important to note that the UK has stated it has no plans to contribute British troops to a multinational monitoring force for the ceasefire. The US, however, is moving troops to establish a civil-military coordination center in Israel, supported by forces from Arab and Muslim countries.
