The Toscanini recordings of Rossini's Overtures have been a hit with record collectors since they were first issued, and have been in continuous release since that time.

A reporter once asked the aging Beethoven who, among the young generation of composers, he believed showed the most promise.

"Rossini!" the great composer replied, "If he spends less time at the salons, and gets over his laziness."

Rossini did like to enjoy life, and sometimes he did need to be pressured to work. For the premiere of "La Gazza Ladra", the conductor had him locked up in a room at the top of La Scala under guard from four watchful stagehands to make sure he completed the overture for the opera, which was to be given its first performance on the following day. One of them had the duty to pass down the pages though an open window to the awaiting copyist.

A composer who often wrote at breakneck speeds, Rossini seldom spent more than a few weeks on any of his operas. Like Mozart, working quickly yielded great musical results for Rossini with no loss of quality. In fact, some great composers worked best that way, including Bach; others like Beethoven and Brahms, could not.

The overture to "La Gazza Ladra", whether composed under duress or not, is a masterpiece in its own right. As are all the overtures performed here.
