"No I was not prepared for the scale, I have to say, we've seen the pictures on television and they're every bit as devastating as they appear but what's more devastating is that you can literally start at one spot in the 9th ward and drive for a couple of hours and you'll see exactly that same devastation and it's a bit shocking, it's a daunting job but we'll start one building at a time and talking to the people in the street there's a great verve and a great spirit to reclaim their homes and to establish their communities again. So by that sheer will alone it will happen."

"I don't think it's just celebrities, I think it's just people I mean we're just talking about people helping people and it's that simple. And I see it on the ground as I walk around here, there's some great organisations up and running, Architecture for Humanity, Habitat for Humanity, I believe, that are doing some great things so it's just pitching in and from September was just witnessing the devastation and feeling like I guess the frustration that very little was being done and you wanted to help out, and that we can do better. Katrina was certainly an indictment that we can do better, and I think that's what this was born from."

"When I think about it, the better question is, what do the people think about it? My personal opinions from visiting here for a few days is, again, it's a bit shocking, it's a bit disturbing. The people have not received the money yet, and that's the fact. Ostensibly it's on it's way but it's not there yet, and people are caught in this limbo, people who want to reclaim their communities are caught in this limbo of not knowing will they receive enough restitution to even rebuild or to get their house to meet Fema standards; will the schools be there, will hospitals be there, will their neighbours be there, are their communities going to be there, so there's a lot of limbo, a pervasive feeling of just of like there's little direction. Except for this will that I talk about, this will, this spirit, and people seem very very determined so it's a positive side at the same time."

PITT LENDS REBUILDING HAND IN NEW ORLEANS
Recent father and Hollywood veteran Brad Pitt lent his celebrity muscle to the rebuilding effort in New Orleans after witnessing first-hand the devastation left by Katrina, almost a year later.
Pitt attended a press conference Friday (14/07) to give an update on a project he is promoting: a competition to choose ecologically sound designs for rebuilding New Orleans neighbourhoods.
The boyfriend of actress turned U.N. goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie said he was shocked at the scale of the destruction:
Global Green USA, a national environmental organisation, is working with Pitt on the design project. Pitt heads a jury of architects, city residents and others who on Friday decided on the top five environmentally friendly designs out of more than 100 entries. The designs were submitted by individuals and architect firms.
