Documenting the Last Remaining Bus Traps in the City of Calgary (Episode 227)

Описание: In the summer of 2022, the City of Calgary announced it was planning on removing the remaining "bus traps" in the city. Bus traps are pits dug into the middle of the road, with a width such that a wider vehicle, such as a bus, can pass over but narrower vehicles like passenger cars become trapped.

Emily had never heard of bus traps before and really wanted to see one. Since we're suckers for old infrastructure -- especially old infrastructure that is going to disappear -- we set out to find and visit all of the remaining bus traps in the city.

Our mission was aided by the fact the City had been removing these "transit only" crossings for the last few years so there were only a handful remaining. We were also pleasantly surprised to learn they only ones left are all on the north side of the city, although at their peak they were found in all quadrants.

So that's how we found ourselves spending a beautiful Spring day driving around looking at things that most people ignore. Sometimes it is fun to five into the overlooked aspects of local history.
