Sonata of Scarlatti K.98 in E Minor is one of my favourite, although it's not among the most famous ones. It's curly and eclectic nature allows us to interpret it very differently.
This sonata features a rather painful confrontation of a doubting chromatic motif (beginning), and a pushy perpetuum mobile element (from 00:12).
The first part consists of a few quite isolated sections, each with different character. It feels like we don’t really know where to turn, trying all the different directions. Thus one of the trickiest parts for the performer is to assign a unique character to each of them, not forgetting about working on a convincing timing between sections, since these character changes always require some additional time.
Another very important skill for performing music of Baroque in general, is to avoid thinking in beats or phrases, feeling a smaller pulsation instead, in this case 16th notes - especially when it comes to "perpetuum mobile" spots, like 00:12 for example. For that we have to avoid any accents on the strong beats, working on the smaller motifs.
