Jimi Hendrix’s spontaneous Cream cover got him banned from the BBC.
On January 4, 1969, the Jimi Hendrix Experience stunned BBC Television audiences by stopping their scheduled performance of “Hey Joe” mid-song and launching into a rendition of Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love.”
That wasn't the plan. The broadcast had been carefully arranged to feature Hendrix in a duet with pop star Lulu. Producers quickly pulled the plug on the jam, cutting it short on air.
The fallout was swift: The 1992 Rock Hall Inductees were banned from performing on BBC Television, cementing the moment as one of rock’s most rebellious live TV stunts.
