Russia Releases Footage of Airstrikes in Syria

Описание: Russia's defense ministry has released footage of the precise airstrikes carried out by the country's air force on Wednesday against Islamic State (IS) ground positions in Syria, as Russian President Vladimir Putin claims that only pre-emptive actions can truly combat international terrorism.

Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov told reporters that, in accordance with the decision made by the Russian president, aircraft of the Aerospace Defense Forces started an aerial operation and carried out localized strikes against IS ground targets in Syrian territory.

Earlier in the day, Russia's Federation Council, the upper house of parliament, granted Putin approval to send armed forces to Syria.

Presidential Administration Chief Sergei Ivanov stressed that Russia will only use air forces to fight against IS militants in Syria at Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's request.

Strikes will be carried out against the military equipment, communication centers, transport vehicles, arms depots, ammunition as well as fuels and lubricant materials of IS terrorists, Interfax news agency quoted Konashenkov as saying.

He added that Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has informed Collective Security Treaty Organization countries of Russia's military operation in Syria.

During a government meeting on Wednesday, Putin stressed that the only true way to combat international terrorism, which he described as rampant in Syria and its neighboring countries, is to act pre-emptively.
