468 AD: How One Night Attack DOOMED Roman Empire | Cape Bon
The Battle of Cape Bon was the climax of a grand expedition — a joint Roman invasion by East and West, led by General Basiliscus, against the Vandal Kingdom of Carthage in 468 AD.
It was one of the largest amphibious operations of the ancient world: over 1,100 ships and 50,000 men gathered to restore Rome’s lost glory in Africa.
But the campaign that began with imperial ambition ended in inferno.
Off the coast of modern-day Tunisia, King Gaiseric of the Vandals feigned peace, requesting a truce that lulled the Romans into complacency.
Then, beneath the cover of night, he unleashed fireships — derelict vessels packed with pitch and flame — that tore through the anchored Roman fleet.
By sunrise, the Mediterranean burned with wreckage and men.
Over 100 ships were lost, 10,000 killed, and with them, the final hope of a dying empire.
The disaster at Cape Bon didn’t just destroy a fleet —
it extinguished the Western Roman Empire’s last chance at survival.
