Here's a question that turns out to matter a lot when you compress a model. Do all of a model's weights deserve equal treatment? For a long time quantization simply assumed yes, and squeezed every weight the same way. AWQ, short for Activation-aware Weight Quantization from Lin and colleagues in twenty twenty-three, says no. A tiny fraction of weights carry most of the quality, and if you protect just those, you can quantize everything else far more aggressively.
