#shorts There are quite a few MYTHS out there about koi ponds.🐠😳
We're here to bust three BIG ones that we've been hearing recently from our clients:
Myth 1) MOSQUITOES🦟
While standing water can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes, koi will eat almost any bug or larvae that float on the surface of the water. That in combination with aeration from a flowing waterfall go a very long way to keeping your pond clear of these pesky bugs.
Myth 2) Need At Least 3ft Of Depth (Particularly In The South) 🪷
While a depth of 3ft might be recommended for colder climates, koi are surprisingly hardy fish and enter a state of semi-hibernation (called torpor) when temperatures drop below about 50°F. So as long as they are still able to get good oxygen through the winter, they are just as happy to hang by the bottom of a pond with a depth as shallow as 2ft until the warmer months roll back around.
Myth 3) Too Much Maintenance🛠️
More often than not, ponds are MUCH less labor intensive and don't require the use of harsh chemicals for regular maintenance that other water features do such as swimming pools. Koi ponds especially, are a natural ecosystem with the fish as its custodians; keeping bugs from breeding on the pond's surface and cleaning algae and debris off the rocks on the bottom and sides of the pond. This in tandem with proper biological filtration, gravel use, and the addition of aquatic plants can lead to a slice of paradise that you can maintain yourself!
Which myth did you think was fact?🤔 Let us know what other myths and misconceptions about all things ponds you'd like us to bust in the COMMENTS below!⬇️⬇️
