ZZK Records Presents Indus - ‘Canción del Muerto’
An homage to the death rituals of the Pacific Coast.
“Canción del Muerto'' (Song of the Dead) is the third single from Indus’s second album, an homage to the death rituals of the Pacific Coast. The song features an unlikely musical encounter in bringing together for the first time two major representatives of Afro-Pacific music from widely differing generations and musical backgrounds: Francisco “Pacho” Torres, legendary marimba player and singer of the Colombian Pacific, and N. Hardem, one of the most important figures in modern Bogotá rap.
The song speaks about the death of a loved one, while paying tribute to the fauna and flora of the Pacific and also to musical dynasties such as the Balanta, Torres and Carabali families, who have passed down their knowledge from generation to generation, through traditional songs and marimbas that are world heritage today, projecting into the future in new Colombian music.
The video was made by the audiovisual collective Eric 2.8.2 and portrays the closeness to death and redemption, coming close to the light like coming close to the end, to the thing that does not return. At the bottom of the ocean, sea creatures and surreal floral scenes dialog with the music and accompany the deceased on their way to the afterlife.
ABOUT INDUS
Indus is an electronic music project inspired by Colombian root sounds. Their first album was released in 2020. The project is led by Barranquilla producer Óscar Alford, who has worked in the studio with the likes of Sidestepper, Ghetto Kumbé, John Montoya and Pedrina y Río. Andres Mercado joins him on percussion.
Indus is a release of acid synths and afro percussion, a tribute to Colombian amphibious cultures, an invitation to dance and trance through the beats and reinterpretation of ancestral sounds. Indus’s sound has been called Afro-Stellar, Techno-Champeta, Latin-Acid and Afro-Pop.
The group has released one album (2020) and three singles (2020 and 2021) independently and two EPs (2020 and 2022) of remixes with Palenque Records. The band’s records explore the reinterpretation of traditional Colombian music through contemporary production techniques, using electronic and acid sequences to take traditional sounds into the clubs. Their work includes collaborations with leading Colombian artists, including kuisi-player Leon Pardo in the song “Gaitas del León” (nominated best Colombian video 2020), the llanero singer-songwriter Hermes Romero on the song “Noche Oscura,” and with iconic bands from San Basilio de Palenque, such as Las Alegras Ambulancias, Sexteto Tabalá and Son Palenque.
Indus has been part of international events like Mutek Montreal 2023 and Bloom Fest in Toronto. They’ve also participated in some of the most prestigious events in Colombia, such as the Festival Colombia al Parque (Bogotá), the Festival Centro (Bogotá), the Festival Jaguar (Palomino), the ZZK Records showcase in Bogotá, and the Tambor Galáctico festival curated by Bomba Estéreo singer Liliana Saumet.
