Mahadayi the lifeline of Western Ghats

Goa, the smallest state of India. It is known for its cultural and natural heritage. On one side it is surrounded by the Arabian sea and on the other side by beautiful western ghats.

Goa's riverline landscape is dominated by the Mandovi River.

The mandovi also called Mhadei rises at an elevation of 600m in the main Sahyadris above the kelil ghat in a degeon village in khanapur taluka belgaum district of karanataka state, located in the Bhimgard wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka plateau.

Flowing for around 29km in karanataka state the river enters Goa state via sattari taluka of North Goa District.

Flowing a length of 76km within the Goa state it falls into Arabian sea at Marmagao bay.

Catchment of mandovi River lies in Goa and partly in karanataka making it an interstate river.

Within Goa state the mandovi River drains an area of 1580 sq km covering about 42% area of the state.
Which is 78% of total area of mandovi River. ( Remaining 22% falls in Karnataka and Maharashtra)

Mahadayi (meaning the great mother). After its confluence with khandepar river at bicholim it is called Mandovi till it meets the Arabian sea.

Mahadayi river is an important tributary of mandovi, holds a great ecological significance for the state. About 85% of the area of mahadayi watershed is forest and is home for Mhadei wildlife sanctuary.

Mhadei wildlife sanctuary hosts one of the lushest and verdant pockets of the western ghats biodiversity hotspots.

The sanctuary covers a vast area of 208 sq km.

Netravali wildlife sanctuary and Bhimgard wildlife sanctuary is also connected to the Mhadei wildlife sanctuary.

These sanctuaries are thickly forested with moist deciduous vegetation and some evergreen species. Apart from large number of commonly seen animals like Indian Gaur, Barking deer, civet, wild boar etc. The animals seen rarely include the black panther, sloth bear, leopard, tiger, dhole, jungle cat, mouse deer, giant squirrel, flying squirrel, Indian pangolin and the slender Lori's which is an endangered species. The sanctuaries are also home to more than 255 species of birds.

The last stretch of mandovi River of 509 sq km of basin area in its final reach is an salinity and very fragile river zone. This is the area, where river meets the Arabian sea. It's an environmentally fragile zone, primarily on the account of the factors relating to high salinity and the ecosystem which develops with such salinity features.

Salt water ingress and tidal influence is felt almost 36 km upstream beyond ganjem and these corresponds to almost 69% of the rivers length with in the state of Goa.
Other 540 sq km is in local conditions do not permit any water resource conservation schemes.

So only 531 sq km out of 1580 sq km drainage in Goa is utilised.

The mandovi lies in the heavy rainfall (3800-5700mm per annum) thickly forested area.

River khandepar, a tributary of mandovi which is an important source of drinking water to more then 30% of Goa's population.

Around 700 ha is covered with mangrove forest along mandovi estuaries
