Remembering who we are, remembering His covenant, and turning back to Him with the whole heart activates His mercy. In 1 Kings 8:46–52, Solomon speaks of a time when the people sin and are carried away captive into the land of the enemy, far or near. Yet if they bethink themselves, repent with all their heart and soul in the land of their captivity, and make supplication toward their land and toward YHWH, then He will hear from heaven, forgive, maintain their cause, and grant them compassion before those who carried them captive. This aligns with Leviticus 26:40–42, where YHWH promises that if they confess their iniquity and humble their uncircumcised hearts, He will remember His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Captivity is not the end — confession, humility, and supplication awaken covenant mercy. YHWH IS A WALL OF FIRE ROUND ABOUT ALL WHO OBEY HIM (Zechariah 2:5). He is a Father to the fatherless and a Judge of the widows (Psalm 68:5), and He executes justice for the widow, giving food and raiment (Deuteronomy 10:18).
“Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul” (Jeremiah 51:6). Deliverance begins with obedience, repentance, and supplication. In Psalm 18 it says, “In my distress I called upon YHWH… He brought me forth also into a large place; He delivered me.” Psalm 91 declares, “He that dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow… He is my refuge and my fortress.” 1 Kings 8:50 says He will grant compassion before captors — meaning YHWH can move on the hearts of other nations to show favor and protection.
