So it's the start of a new year, plans that got put off last year will be brought fourth this year. Amidst all the excitement of having a car that runs and drives I've overlooked the amount of mechanical advance the MSD Pro Billet distributor came set up with. It turns out that it's a lot!
I've managed to put about 300km on the car since the new distributor went in and whilst I haven't heard the car pinking or detonating at any point I haven't really subjected it to anything demanding like a run up the Toowoomba Range with 5 people in the car or anything like that!
Since I have some tuning parts in a bag tucked away I should get them out and see whats what with all this mechanical advance tuning guff or at least watch a video tutorial or two on the subject. Or just one video, well actually half a video before I have a go at it myself.
The goodie bag came with an assortment of springs and more importantly some colour coded spacers that can be swapped to adjust the amount the distributor advance weights move out under increased RPM. Smallest spacer gives the most advance and the largest spacer gives the least advance.
All I had to do was find a 9mm spanner and turn it at about 30 degrees at a time until the lock nut and washer retaining the spacer fell away into the distributor body and then once I found it again and paired it with my new spacer I could awkwardly reinstall it all!
