Mont Marmont near the Dutch village of Woudenberg was built in 1804 by the army of French general de Marmont. In 1805 Marmont’s army fought in Austerlitz. In 1806, despite protests from Marmont, Louis Bonaparte, the new king of Holland, renamed the hill the Pyramid of Austerlitz or Pyramide van Austerlitz.
The Pyramid of Austerlitz is the model for the larger Lion of Waterloo, the pyramid built by Dutch King William I as a monument to the Battle of Waterloo (1815) where Napoleon was defeated. The mound marks the spot where his son William II was injured.
