This kayak fishing episode is a little different and a little more challenging. My friend flew into Maui from the Mainland for his birthday. He loves to fish, but has never done anything like kayak fishing. Especially not four miles out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I hooked him up with Gilbert, the man…myth…legend, that runs The Fishing Buddy Maui so could experience a Hawaiian sleighride. Gilbert has tandem Hobie Kayaks, filled with top-of-the-line gear and even an electric motor. This all means as the client, you get to just enjoy the best parts of kayak fishing, while Gilbert does all the hard work!
There were about 7 of us making our way out from the landing that morning. At the halfway point, we loaded up with bait, which Gilbert does have his clients jig for their own bait so they can learn the process. Once we had enough bullets in the chamber, it was time to head towards the fishing grounds. I was lucky enough to get the first hookup, which turned out to be a green jobfish (uku). Just as I got him onboard, a voice came over the VHF saying that my friend was on! This is where things got tricky. Putting a drone up in the air and finding another kayak in the vast open ocean is not easy! We did manage to put it together and now you can watch the full battle between man and yellowfin tuna (ahi / shibi) from above. This was the absolute highlight of the day.
Not long after that my deep rod went off again and this time it was an amberjack (kahala). We generally don’t eat these fish in Hawaii, but he put up a great fight and lived to see another day. My friend on Gilbert’s kayak did get another strike, but the fish popped off halfway through the fight. After this the wind started creeping up so we decided it was time to head back to shore. At this point we realized how lucky we had been. Out of the 7 kayaks out on the water, we were the only ones to put fish on the deck. Although there were a few misses, including a marlin that morning.
This turned out to be just about the perfect kayak fishing trip. My good friend got to experience firsthand what it is like to reel in a legit sized fish from a kayak, in good conditions, while being surrounded by the beautiful Hawaiian islands and even the occasional humpback whale.
