We’ve wanted to do this project for a long time… and we finally did it. In this video, we install a hand-driven sandpoint well from scratch — hammering it into the ground section by section until we hit water!
No drilling rig.
No heavy equipment.
Just pipe, a sandpoint, some determination… and a LOT of hammering.
We show the entire process:
Assembling the sandpoint and pipe sections
Applying thread compound (and why you shouldn’t overdo it!)
Driving the well into the ground manually
Adding additional pipe sections
Measuring depth
Hitting water for the first time
Priming the hand pump
Switching to an electric pump for testing
Developing the well until the water runs clear
We ended up around 26 feet deep and successfully pumped clear, sustained water without it running dry. Proof of concept!
This well will be used for:
Shower water
Mixing concrete
Watering plants
Fire backup
Future cabin plans
And yes — we’ll be getting the water tested.
If you’ve ever wondered:
How hard is it to drive a sandpoint well?
How deep can you go by hand?
Will it actually produce water?
Does it really run clear?
We answer all of that in this video.
🛠️ Gear Used:
Sandpoint well kit (1¼" pipe)
Pipe wrenches
Ladder (lots of climbing…)
Electric utility pump (for development)
Generator
Thread compound & tape
⚠️ Lessons Learned:
Don’t put thread compound too close to the bottom
Clean your pipes before assembly
Prime your pump properly (read the manual!)
Development is key to clear water
It’s a serious workout
If you’re building off-grid, preparing for emergencies, or just want independent water access, a driven sandpoint well might be worth considering.

We’ve got big plans coming — including a cabin build where we’ll try a hand pump setup again.
Water independence starts somewhere. This was ours.
