It is some of the best footage we’ve seen so far in this America’s Cup cycle, with Emirates Team New Zealand implementing a high intensity pre-start practice routine that had watchers on the edge of their seat as the AC40 and AC40 LEQ12 went head to head on lead-ins to the start line. Over and over they practiced it, with the two boats judging time-on-distance and doing their upmost to shut the other out in coffin corner at the leeward end of the start line.
Speaking afterwards, Tony Rae, a living legend of Emirates Team New Zealand as a member of the Black Magic crew in 1995 and a seven (or is it 8?) time campaigner, gave his racing assessment of the training schedule today saying: “The thing today was obviously taking turns at leading in or trailing in and just the manoeuvres before the start and dialling down and trying to lock each other out that sort thing. So the manoeuvrability of the boats in that much breeze and obviously the timing, because we know that going back to the line it can change very quickly from being early, to quite late, so yeah there's just a lot going on and you can never do too much of that sort of starting so I think today was good obviously for both boats to be able to just keep doing that over and over instead of worrying about the rest of the race.”
Section 41. Reconnaissance
a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”).
b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with.
c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports.
