The story is about an actor, (Bill Irwin, A MacArthur genius award winner), who wants to develop and promote a “new theater” in contrast stale, timeworn traditions of the “old” theater.
I recorded this as it was broadcast over the air in 1983.
(There are actually two programs on this tape: “The Regard of Flight” goes to 45:35, then 5 short “Clown Bagatelles” follow and go to the end).
Much of the humor comes from the fact that he can’t escape from these old, stale traditions (some as old as vaudeville, and older) in his attempt to create a “new” theater.
At various times in the play, speeches from a “manifesto” for the new theater are given. The humor here is the irony (am I using that word correctly?) of the pretentious words of the manifesto contrasted with the old school action happening on stage.
Timestamps for some of the "Manifesto" statements:
7:15, 12:15, 21:05, 28:45
There are a couple of ukulele songs: 15:50, 24:30
26:30: he disguises himself to escape and form a new “new theater”,
28:15: the proscenium (old theater) stops him.
29:15: “Use the device…” still can’t escape from old theater.
33:15: “Shakespeare!” Used as a weapon.
35:30: The director appears and takes over the production. The actor loses control of the play.
44:20: The actor kills the director by using a comically large pencil as a stake to drive into the director’s heart, a la Dracula.
The “Clown Bagatelles” are worth watching, too. Especially, “The Swinger”.
