Cleansing Flights Everywhere — But Not Every Hive Made It

After 3–4 weeks of arctic cold, snow, and an 8–10 inch ice and snow pack here on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, we finally got our first warm day above 50°F — and that meant one thing: cleansing flights.
In this video, we check on the apiary after the deep freeze to see which colonies survived the cold stretch. The bees that made it through were flying strong, giving us a great opportunity to quickly support them by clearing entrances and adding emergency winter feed.
We added Hive Alive fondant to help colonies bridge the final weeks of winter until natural forage begins to appear. Late winter is one of the most critical times for colony survival, and small interventions now can make a big difference when the spring nectar flow arrives.
We did find a few winter losses — part of beekeeping in colder climates — but we were encouraged by how many colonies came through this stretch in good shape. There are still a few weeks of winter left here in the Mid-Atlantic, so now it’s about helping the survivors stay strong until spring.
If you’re wintering bees where you live, this is the time to stay observant and ready to help when the weather allows.
