The term "wassail" comes from the Old English "waes hael", meaning "be in good health" or "be well". The practice originated as a drinking tradition where people would go from house to house, offering songs and well-wishes in exchange for food and drink—especially spiced cider or ale, known as wassail. This was somewhat similar to modern caroling, but with a stronger emphasis on feasting, merrymaking, and communal gathering.
Hank Cramer is an American traveling folk singer known for his deep, resonant voice and extensive repertoire of traditional folk, maritime, and cowboy songs. With a career spanning several decades, he has performed across the United States and internationally, sharing stories through music that reflect the history and culture of the working-class and frontier life. Hank’s engaging stage presence and commitment to preserving folk traditions have made him a beloved figure in the folk music community.
