Can a thermoelectric cooler actually freeze water? And can the same device melt that ice just by reversing the power?
In this experiment, the Sheetak team takes a standard thermoelectric cooler (TEC), also known as a Peltier cooler, and pushes it through a simple but powerful demo. First, we configure the device to pull heat away from water until it freezes into solid ice. Then we reverse the polarity, flipping the direction of heat flow so the same thermoelectric module becomes a heater and melts the ice back into liquid.
This happens because thermoelectric coolers work using the Peltier effect. When electrical current flows through the device, heat is pumped from one side of the module to the other, creating a cold side and a hot side. Reverse the current and the heat flow reverses too. The side that was cold becomes hot and vice versa.
Unlike traditional refrigeration systems, thermoelectric coolers have no compressors, refrigerants, or moving parts. They use solid-state semiconductor technology to move heat using electricity, which makes them compact, precise, and highly reliable for many thermal management applications.
