Haroon Shinwari for Pakhtun Digital explores a thriving vertical tomato farm in Mian Morcha, Khyber district, where local farmers are revolutionizing agriculture through modern techniques. Once a country that relied on expensive imported tomatoes, Pakistan is now producing thousands of tons of tomatoes locally, supplying cities like Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and beyond.
With the help of vertical farming, farmers are able to grow more tomatoes on less land, saving water and increasing yield. One kanal of land can produce up to 300 maunds of tomatoes, and daily collections can reach 45–50 maunds, thanks to fertile land and nearby canal irrigation. This method not only results in bigger, longer-lasting tomatoes, but also reduces post-harvest spoilage—tomatoes can stay fresh for up to 10 days without refrigeration.
The report also features insights from local agricultural officers and farmers who share the economic benefits, initial investment, and government support. This video is a proud showcase of Khyber's growing role in Pakistan’s self-sufficiency in agriculture.
