🎸 ZOOT were an Australian pop/rock band formed in Adelaide, South Australia in 1964. The classic lineup of Darryl Cotton (vocals), Rick Springfield (guitar/vocals), Beeb Birtles (bass/vocals) and Rick Brewer (drums) became one of Australia's most popular bands of the 60's/70's. The 2019 CD 'Archaeology' celebrates 50 years of ZOOT!
Late in 2018 I reached out to Beeb Birtles, requesting an interview. Beeb was on his way to Australia from his (now) home near Nashville, USA. A tight schedule made an interview impossible but Beeb promised to and kept his word to catch up in early 2019. Beeb was returning to Australia to perform at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
And so at 10am Monday morning on the 11th of February 2019, Beeb and Donna Birtles were greeted at our door by my wife Anita, myself and Tommie Bassotto, our miniature Dachshund and official 'guest welcomer'.
Beeb and I retreated to my studio and recorded 3 interviews, the first to promote his live show at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, another highlighting Beeb's years as a founding member of the Little River Band (also on this channel) and the third for this video - chatting about the ZOOT Archaeology CD release. A busy morning indeed.
I wish I had Beeb's story about "I hope it's not another bloody guitar!" in the video. It's a hilarious 'foot in mouth' moment he and Donna told us over lunch. Maybe another time.
On reviewing the video footage, I put up a post on social media and was soon contacted by ZOOT's drummer Rick Brewer, now living near Brisbane in Queensland Australia. Rick went on to become a founding member of Jim Keays & Southern Cross', 'The Ferrets' and 'The Motivators. Rick and I had a chat over the phone and afterwards he said "why don't you get Rick Springfield involved". Sure, said I - why not? 😀
I could see this episode was growing legs so I held off editing. Rick put me in contact with ZOOT's Australian affairs manager Bruce Hutchins (who is fast becoming a mate!). Bruce put me in contact with Rick Springfield's American manager Wayne Sharp. Rick was on a 2 week break during a USA tour. Wayne arranged the interview and a few days later I was chatting with Rick Springfield from his Los Angeles home at the ungodly musician's hour of 8am on a cold Saturday morning. Well, here in Melbourne anyway.
Beeb chipped in with some rare photo's and slowly but surely I had the material I needed to create a video worthy of this great band. It's not easy being a one-man production team but it sure is a lot of fun!
Please take 15 uninterrupted minutes and watch this video. There's some important Australian rock music history delivered by Beeb Birtles, Rick Springfield and Rick Brewer. I'd like to thank Bruce Hutchins, Wayne Sharp and of course Beeb and the two Rick's for their enthusiasm and contributions. I'm dedicating this video to Darryl Cotton. I hope you enjoy 'ZOOT - Archaeology'.
Cheers, Jackson Moon 🎸
