Asian countries have tightened border surveillance after Nipah virus cases were reported in India. Several airports across Asia have been placed on high alert following the emergence of new cases. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the fatality rate of the Nipah virus ranges between 40 and 70 percent, while Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control has classified the virus as a Category 5 threat.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Nipah a priority dangerous virus and has called for immediate research. Meanwhile, Western media reports that the United Kingdom, Nepal, Thailand, Taiwan, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka have begun screening Indian passengers at airports. Experts warn that holding the T20 World Cup amid the presence of the Nipah outbreak could put players from different countries at serious risk.
