Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) is a procedure to remove the tissue blocking urine flow via the prostate. It’s performed under general anaesthesia. Before the surgery, the doctor may recommend a 6-hour fast. A surgeon inserts a resectoscope through the urethra, and a laser is inserted in it to free up the enlarged prostate tissue. The excised tissue is deposited in the bladder. The resectoscope is removed and replaced by a urinary catheter. The procedure takes 1 to 2 hours and requires an overnight hospital stay for observation and catheter care.
