EFESTO is a 5kN class rocket engine prototype developed by the PoliTo Rocket Team (belong to Politecnico di Torino, Italy).
It uses a combination of liquid ethanol and nitrous oxide to produce thrust and it's designed for additive manufacturing from Inconel 718 powders. L-PBF AM allows to reduce the number of components of the engine to two (a combustion chamber and an injector head) and to include multiple features in a single manufacturing step, such as regenerative cooling, film cooling, an advanced injectors design and flow distribution geometries.
Manufacturing by Sòphia High Tech.
Sòphia uses SLM [Selective Laser Melting] Technology, ensuring the process qualification acc. to the ECSS- Q-ST-70-80C, released by European Space Agency on 30 July 2021. Sòphia High Tech is fully compliance with all the requirements for processing and quality assurance of powder bed fusion technologies for Space Applications. Then, a set of phases are specified, each to be followed when defining, verifying and manufacturing parts using metallic powder bed fusion technologies. In addition, requirements for operating and supervision personnel and equipment facilities are fully procedure and reported. The rule does not aim to prescribe process parameters relevant to the fabrication using metallic powder bed fusion technologies, they are internal know-how of Sòphia High Tech.
