Minimalism is the practice of living with a reduced amount of physical belongings and engaging in mindful consumerism. It does not mean zero consumption. That would be asceticism. This is about what I buy/consume as a minimalist, what I spend money on the most.

A minimalist money mindset

I personally think that "minimalist money mindset" is a made-up term. It's a keyword to rank in search. Because, come on, this would be different for every minimalist. It is not like in frugalism, that it implies certain habits. I know minimalists that like to spend a lot of money on there things and I know frugal minimalists who don't. Minimalism hosts a variety of lifestyles and opinions. So no, this video is not about that. It is about the value of nice things. Of nice things that might cost a little more but might make you "happier" in the long run...

Minimalism and money... and privilege

Minimalism is not only a lifestyle, it can also come from need. For many privileged people, minimalism has something to do with quality of life and interior and just having a nice clean apartment. But for others it is a financial struggle and they might just need to downsize to maintain their very basic lifestyle. That is something worth thinking about. I actually believe, that minimalism can help people. Because one common mistake, if you do not have the resources, is to hold on to many things, to be afraid to lose money if you give them up. There are so many aspects to it. I can't possibly talk about all of them in this video. But I just wanted to say that this is almost always a misconception. Letting go will help you, because it will make your life easier and give you some headspace.

A minimalist finance mindset

I think that everyone can have that kind of mindset. The idea of not wanting anything unless it is absolutely necessary. That is what, in the end, saves you money as a minimalist.

I do not have to constantly monitor my finances, because I rarely ever buy anything. Nothing about purchasing a new item is casual to me. I think about it ten times before I buy it (except for kids' clothes, yep).

How minimalism saves you money

As a minimalist, you will not spend as much money on things in general. The goal is to bring less into your life. To second-guess every new item, every purchase, on the go. That is what minimalism does with your brain. And yes, that might sound a bit OCD-ish, and it might be for some people, but if you think about it, this is actually the normal way to go about purchases.

We live in such wealthy and privileged societies today. Purchasing new things has never been easier. They are literally just a mouse click away. That is not how it is supposed to be. That is not how working for something should feel like. Cheap consumer items, most of all fast fashion goods, are the perfect example of how consumerism wastes the planet and your money.

Does minimalism help with financial problems?

Yes, it does. 100%. But even more it helps with quality of life. Because if you stop buying new cheap things all the time, you can afford less but more high quality things - over time. This might not seem doable right now, but I promise you, it will, in the future. Minimalism can always be a way out of fast fashion, fast consumerism and therefore out of the trap of buying something cheap to have it right away, just to buy it again next year.
