This is the testimony on Vino and an interview about her past and current struggles and success. Vino is from India and an Hindu background. She now is a student, wife, and yoga instructor in Texas.
A clarification from vino on yoga as a form of hindu idol worship:
"Now, I don't know how people try to turn this into a god. But no, Hindu gods are not doing this, neither do Hindus pray in these poses.
They may say it is their god, because they worship everything. That's my head stand and wheel pose. When Hindus worship their gods, they do not do yoga poses and pray. They fold hands and stand or sit, just like a Christian would... but they have the tendency to say that everything that is good is god. That's their ideology. That should not stop a Christian from practicing this effective exercise and benefitting from it.
However, if a Christian feels like yoga is interfering with their beliefs in Jesus, then they should stop doing it. Because they probably lack the discerning spirit... so they are not able to differentiate between God & His creation, that they mistake this exercise for some god... For instance there's a flow called sun salutations. Now you can do it in front of the sun and worship the sun, but that's not what I do. It is an exercise flow with synchronized motion that targets your whole body. It is best when done in the morning or in the evening, so they related that to sun and started worshipping it as salutations to sun or sun god.
I generally focus on teaching my clients what muscle and organ does each pose or flow targets and how it benefits them. I focus on the anatomical & physiological aspects of yoga in a person. There is no place for Hindu god there. And in my meditation session, I meditate on the word of God and the biological aspects of our body to create awareness of one's self. There are Hindu teachers out there who will tell you every bit of yoga is Hindu gods. So, I teach Hatha yoga, it has breath work, poses, flows, & meditation. Now, the poses are mostly named after an animal or a bird or warrior pose... I teach all the hatha poses and flows and breath work.
None of them have any relation to any god. But a certain sect of people from Hinduism may refer to them as their gods poses. That's not where it came from though. As I said, an atheist designed yoga. It just happened to be from the Hindu country, so Hindus quickly adapted it and integrated it into their religion."
A clarification on the Catholic Church from myself:
I don't belive that all Catholics worship idols. However I do think that veneration on saints is an accretion of man made tradition. By no means do I want to condemn all Catholics but this is the experience of Catholicism for Vino in India.
