In 1991, I lived by Lake Atitlán in Guatemala.
There were only a handful of foreigners, no hotels, and a deep sense of connection — to the place and to myself.
Near the lake was a small village with many street kids. I remember wanting to come back one day and build a school for them.
Two weeks after I returned to Denmark, I received a telefax saying the village had been wiped out by the Guatemalan government.
That story has stayed with me for decades.
Now, 35 years later, I’m returning to Lake Atitlán — not just to travel, but to find closure. I’m hoping to connect with someone who lived there back then and can tell me what really happened.
This video is about nomad life, memory, unfinished stories, and what it feels like to return to a place that still lives inside you.
If you were in Guatemala in the early 90s — especially around Lake Atitlán — I would love to hear from you.
Thank you for being here.
