Until the 1500s, depictions of Black male subjects by European painters were primarily limited to Christian images of St Maurice and Balthazar (one of the Three Kings). Some art historians have rightly pointed out that these characterisations can sometimes lead to an erasure of the ‘real’ identities of the Black sitters depicted.
One of the earliest depictions of a Black man outside of a religious context in European art is seen in Albrecht Dürer’s drawing (c. 1508). A few decades later, painter Agnolo Bronzino would paint Alessandro de’ Medici, the young prince in Florence.
