Beneath Torchwood’s Cardiff Hub, deeper than the archives and Weevil cells, there was a level so classified only Jack knew it existed. They called it The Vault.

That changed when the alarms went off.

Red lights strobed as the Hub shook violently. Gwen raced to the lift, hearing Ianto in her comm.

“Level Minus Six! Jack—whatever’s down there is active!”

The Vault doors opened with a heavy groan. Inside, a fractured sphere of reinforced glass revealed something metallic, hunched, and humming with energy.

“EXTERMINATE.”

The Dalek blasted its way out, containment fields tearing apart. Jack fired—pointless—but it bought Ianto seconds to dive into a nearby console.

“If I can seal the sector—”

The Dalek spun toward him.

“TARGET ACQUIRED.”

A beam lanced the air, forcing Ianto to roll aside as the wall erupted behind him. Gwen opened fire, bullets pinging harmlessly off its casing.

With a surge of power, the Dalek smashed through the Vault’s upper access doors, rising level by level. By the time they caught up, it was in the Hub’s main floor, floating toward the surface lift.

Jack shouted over the din:

“We can’t let it reach the city!”

Too late—metal doors burst open, daylight flooding in. People screamed as the Dalek emerged onto Cardiff Bay.

Sirens wailed. The Dalek scanned the crowd.

“HUMANS DETECTED. EXTERMINATE.”

Jack charged, shoving bystanders out of the way. Gwen pulled Ianto toward a side alley where an old Rift stabiliser node was hidden beneath a service hatch.

“If we can lure it here—” Gwen panted.

Jack made himself the bait, firing at the Dalek until it followed. It hovered over the hatch, charging its weapon—when Ianto slammed the stabiliser online.

A tearing blue vortex erupted, dragging the Dalek in with a shriek of grinding metal and rage. Then—silence.

They stood in the empty street, breathing hard.

Gwen looked to Jack.

“Where did it go?”

Jack holstered his Webley.

“Somewhere far away. Let’s hope it stays there.”

Far below, in the depths of the Rift, a faint voice hissed through the void.

“Surviv…e…”
