Don’t Torch Braze Thick Steel Until You See This Trick

Описание: MuggyWeld.com customers have asked how well the SSQ-6 silver solder syringe works on larger, thicker metals compared to thinner metals. We’d prefer to show you than just tell you how this brazing process works.

When working with larger or thicker metals, it’s important to broadly heat the area around the joint. Preheating the metal near the SSQ-6 application point ensures better flow and creates a stronger bond to the parent metal surface.

Once the steel tubing reaches the appropriate working temperature, gently press the plunger to apply SSQ-6 silver solder paste. Be careful not to overheat the steel applicator tip.

Tip: If using a vise, ensure there’s enough space between the clamp and your work area. The vise will act as a heat sink, pulling heat away from the joint and inhibiting the flow of the silver solder paste (you’ll notice the flux and metals may start to separate).

The same advice applies when working on a metal table—while tables are great work surfaces, remember to elevate the part (using something like a coat hanger) to prevent the table from drawing heat away from the work area.

According to the American Welding Society, brazing occurs at temperatures of 842°F (450°C) and above. If the filler metal melts below 842°F, it’s considered soldering.

Notice how long it takes for a 1-inch steel pipe to reach the 1050°F working temperature of SSQ-6, even when using an oxyacetylene torch. It’s crucial to bring the parent metal up to the proper temperature quickly to avoid separation between the part and flux, as shown.

Caution: Do not store near food. If refrigerating SSQ-6, please store it in a designated "chemical only" refrigerator.
