This is an Albertson and Co. valve lapping tool. I found this in an antique shop for $5 and even though it was missing the long shaft that attaches to a valve I still thought it would be a fun project. I have no idea how old this tool is, but from what I could gather it's between 1910 to around 1967. Right off the bat I had no idea how to take it apart. I couldn't get the big nut out of the housing, and I also thought that the side plate was pressed on (later realizing it was threaded). It took me about a week to finally figure out how the side plate was taken off to get all the inner parts out and cleaned up. After that it was smooth sailing from there on out.
I had to tap new threads where the new valve shaft would go into, so I could thread the 10mm bolt in that I would be using. Originally there were threads two-thirds down in the part but I couldn't find a bolt to match those decades old threads, so tapping new threads in seemed like the most reasonable option. After assembling all the parts I tested it out, and even though it turned smoother I can see why people don't use this tool anymore. It's big and bulky plus its a little hard to keep still when it engages the opposite gear teeth and turns the other way. If nothing else it would be an impressive boat anchor. THANKS FOR WATCHING!
