“The Money Store” is about being part of a community, and who gets to decide that. The lyric “My blood is red if I say so” evokes the concept of a “red-blooded American” – and if I say I am something, who are you to tell me I’m not? The narrator has emerged from a horrific work injury to embrace a sort of life that is the subject of countless pop songs – “cool guy, windows down, headed to the new part of town.” Yet in the end, it all comes back to needing to get back to one place– the quiet desperation underneath the American Dream-- the money store.
