This is the way I like to check for brake lever free play - making sure you can push the pads / pistons back which in turn pushes fluid back through the system into the fluid reservoir. If the pads / pistons won't move, the fluid is being blocked from flowing. Works well in rear brakes too - I'll do a rear brake specific video at some point.
This is an issue with lots of aftermarket brake levers, and really needs to be checked. Some of the levers have screw adjusters locked by little grub screws that are often loose or missing, allowing the adjusters to move - they can go both ways, giving too little or excessive free play.
