In today’s wildlife photography vlog, I put the Canon RF 200-800mm lens through its paces at RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands — with my ever-unhelpful Border Terrier, Jarvis, getting feisty before I leave.
I’ve loved this lens on paper, but in real-world low light conditions it’s been… challenging. Shooting at 800mm f/9 during dawn and dusk means I’m constantly battling high ISO, noise, and slow shutter speeds. So in this video I test how it performs in soft overcast light, and question whether I’d be better off with the Canon RF 100-500mm + 1.4x extender instead.
Along the way I encounter:
🪶 Herons, Curlews, Pintails, Geese, Marsh Harrier & a Sparrowhawk
🏞 Beautiful hides across Burton Mere (massive credit to the RSPB team!)
🐶 A loveable Border Terrier
💡 Hard-earned lessons on shutter speeds, crop modes & flight photography
🎥 If you’re into:
Canon RF lenses & wildlife gear talk
Bird photography and nature reserve vlogs
Border Terriers pretending to help
…then you’re in the right place.
