In 2003, astronomers observed the quasar SDSS J1011+5442 (SDSS J101152.98+544206.4), a black hole some 50 million times more massive than the Sun, gorging on superheated gas at the center of its galaxy. In 2015, new measurements revealed a huge decrease in the spectrum of the quasar, with hydrogen-alpha emission dropping by a factor of 50. It seems the black hole has swallowed all the gas in its vicinity and the quasar looks like a normal galaxy now.
