Patricia Finnerty, Continence Nurse Specialist, Primary Care CHO8, begins by discussing bladder issues in Parkinson’s, including difficulties with storing and emptying. The goal in managing anyone with bladder problems is to rule out any other issues that may be age-related. After this, it is important to identify any Parkinson’s-specific bladder issues.
The effects of Parkinson’s on the bladder may include stress incontinence, urgency, urge incontinence, hesitancy, poor flow, and overflow. Age-related changes, functional changes, and bladder stimulants are also addressed.
A medical assessment from your GP is crucial in managing any bladder or bowel issue.
Strategies for managing overactive bladder and emptying problems are discussed.
Voiding and storage disorders may co-exist but must be managed separately.
Bladder investigations, such as urodynamic studies, are explained. Management options are outlined for:
a) overactive bladder, and
b) voiding difficulties, including intermittent self-catheterisation and
c) functional incontinence.
A bladder record form, bladder retraining, bladder stimulators, medication review, special underwear, urinals, uribags, condom drainage systems, and indwelling urethral catheters are all discussed.
In relation to the bowel, constipation is examined, along with emptying tips and how to establish a regular bowel habit.
You are encouraged to reach out to your local Public Health Nurse or GP if you need help in this area.
