In 1946, Ann Petry (1908-1997) became something of an overnight celebrity with the publication of her debut novel, The Street, the first book by a Black woman to sell over a million copies. But despite her early fame, Petry occupies a peripheral position in the history of 20th-century American literature, where she lives in the shadow of her much more famous male contemporary, Richard Wright.
In this installment of our summer-long Festival of Forgotten Authors virtual program, Adult Services Librarian Bob Abbey discusses the life and career of Ann Petry, an unjustly neglected writer whose fiction and short stories provide fresh insights into issues such as race, class, and gender, and whose narratives shine a light on the unique lived experiences of Black working class women.
