Hobbit Hole Reveal - Making a Stone Window Frame

In this video, I demonstrate my technique for building a circular widow frame from rough-cut natural stone. Using rough stone creates an interesting challenge in that the visual appeal comes from the irregularity of the size and shape of the stones. However, it is important to also have an underlying precise geometry, as the eye can detect a "wonky" circle. A tricky balancing act indeed.

Stones are carefully selected for close to correct size and shape. Chipping and cutting are usually necessary to achieve a good fit. The lower half is constructed with the use of a simple pendulum tool. The top half is constructed over a plywood form. I have made brick circles in the past using the same process, but, they are much easier and faster because of the uniformity of the size and shape of the blocks.
