A wave of violence has swept through half a dozen Mexican states with torched cars and gunmen blocking multiple highways after the killing of cartel kingpin ‘El Mencho’.
The former police-officer turned drug lord was killed in an operation led by the Mexican military ending in a shootout that left four gang members dead, and three officers injured.
Hundreds have been trapped in the city of Puerto Vallarta, with tourists being told to "shelter in place" as airlines cancel flights in and out of the city.
The Mexican President says activities had been "normal" for most of the country urging residents to stay calm.
