In this PLAB 2-focused video, we cover the complete urine dipstick examination, starting from initial urine inspection to interpreting dipstick results. This station is commonly tested in PLAB 2 and follows NICE and GMC standards.
What’s included:
1. Visual Inspection of Urine:
Colour: Normal (straw-coloured) vs dark, red, cloudy, or orange
Clarity: Clear vs cloudy (infection or contamination)
Odour: Sweet (suggestive of ketonuria/diabetes), foul (infection)
2. Urine Dipstick Procedure:
Explain procedure to the patient (ICE approach if required)
Use clean gloves and check expiry date of the dipstick
Dip the strip and time it accurately (usually 60 seconds)
Compare the strip to the color chart on the container
3. Dipstick Interpretation:
Leukocytes & Nitrites: Suggestive of UTI
Protein: May indicate kidney issues or infection
Blood: Infection, trauma, stones, or malignancy
Glucose: Diabetes or pregnancy-related glycosuria
Ketones: Starvation, uncontrolled diabetes
pH and Specific Gravity: Hydration status and acid-base balance
