I saw this Howard Croston pattern in Fly Fishing & Fly Tying, a magazine from the UK. The pattern in the article was tied with a brown dubbing mix. I have tied this pattern in both brown and olive. It is a quick tie, but very effective. It can be fished independently, but it shines as part of a dry dropper rig.
Hook: Fulling Mill Grab Gape Heavy size 12-20
Bead: Copper, Silver (Nickel), or Black Nickel Tungsten Bead sized to match
Thread: 8/0 Classic Waxed Semperfli to Match body color
Tail: I use coq de leon dyed to match dubbing color, but you can use any hackle fibers
Abdomen/Thorax: Rabbit dubbing color of choice
Soft Hackle: Starling Hackle
