Higashi Chayagai, Kanazawa’s historic teahouse district, dates back to 1820. During the Edo period, residential buildings were typically restricted to a single story, but this area was granted special permission to construct two-story teahouses. Geisha used to entertain guests here with traditional music and dance, and today, some of these historic teahouses are open to the public. The distinctive latticework juts out toward the street wasn’t just decorative—it was designed to help prevent the spread of fire. The earthy tones of the buildings come from natural pigments found in local soil, blending tradition with nature in every detail.
