Lead me, Lord, lead me in thy righteousness;
make thy way plain before my face.
For it is thou, Lord, thou, Lord only,
that makest me dwell in safety.
–Book of Psalms 5:8 & 4:9
Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810 – 1876), famous in his lifetime as one of England’s leading organists and choirmasters, composed almost exclusively for the Church of England. Beloved to this day, his better-known anthems include “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace,” and “Wash me throughly.” He composed many fine hymn tunes, at least four of which have become widely sung in England. One of his tunes—Aurelia—is in the Lutheran Hymnal: ELW 654 “The Church’s One Foundation.”
