This is Episode 26 of our 60-part series on the Vikings. In 878 AD, a Viking force led by Ubba Ragnarsson, one of the sons of Ragnar Lothbrok, descended on the Saxon-held fortress of Cynwit in Devon. The Saxons inside were few in number and faced the terrifying prospect of a full Norse siege. Ubba expected an easy victory, but the garrison refused to yield. Instead, the defenders bided their time, waiting for the moment when the Vikings had let down their guard. At dawn, they launched a sudden and ferocious sally, catching the Norse completely off guard.

The ambush turned into a rout, and Ubba Ragnarsson himself was slain, dealing a major blow to the Viking leadership in England. For the Saxons, the victory at Cynwit was more than just a battlefield success—it was a symbol of hope in one of the darkest years of their struggle. With Wessex under siege and King Alfred forced into hiding, Cynwit showed that resistance was still possible. The triumph gave courage to the West Saxons, proving that even against overwhelming odds, the Viking tide could be turned through boldness and resolve.
